This unique hand-made rosary creates a bold statement by combining African Kazuri beads with the San Damiano Cross.
The 6 large pater beads are called Kazuri beads. They are made in Kenya, Africa by women who work for the beading cooperative started in 1975 by Lady Susan Wood, with the mission of providing work for a few women to help them support their families and better their lives. The beads are shaped, polished, fired, painted and re-fired. The result is "kazuri' which in Swahili means "small and beautiful". Today Kazuri Ltd. employs nearly 400 women who get health insurance, school supplies for their children and make nearly three to five times the national average in wages. Most of these women also support 10 to 20 extended family members.
The cross of San Damiano, is also known as the Cross of St. Francis. It is said that St. Francis was praying before this cross when he was said to have received his commission from God to rebuild the Church.
The San Damiano cross in this rosary is made in Italy. The image has been laminated onto a hardwood cross. This particular crucifix is also a 3rd class relic. The rosary has been strung with a high quality, 49 strand, nylon coated, beading wire.
