Faith Necklace
This one-of-a-kind necklace combines two types of lampwork beads with obsidian chips and 6 mm creamy vintage beads from Germany. The distinctive 40 x 6 mm pendant is called Swazi after the country in Africa where they are created. The pendant is made of ceramic and recycled glass. The work "Faith" is imprinted on it in both English and Swahili. The necklace is strung on a high quality, 49 strand, nylon coated beading wire and double crimped for added security.
The Swazi project was launched in 2007, and employs 25 women who create
quality ceramic jewelry by hand. These women are provided with flexible
work opportunities and a fair and sustainable source of income,
enabling each woman to provide for her family.
The group has become a member of SWIFT (Swaziland International Fair Trade Association) and is part of the burgeoning Fair Trade community in Swaziland; it has demonstrated its commitment to the principles of Fair Trade and hopes to raise awareness about the potential for Fair Trade to lift families out of poverty.
Working in a clean, safe environment, the women constantly train to combine their traditional skills with new techniques and are encouraged in their creative endeavors. Some of the items they use in their products include recycled crushed amber glass, which melts into the ceramic to produce a beautiful amber sheen, and tools such as old typewriter keys, forks and other common items to create decorations on the beads.
